Exceptions
It is important to note these exceptions to protecting a patient’s privacy. Under these circumstances, we are legally required to take immediate action:

  • If child abuse or dependent adult or elder abuse is suspected, we must immediately report suspicions of abuse to the authorities.
  • If a client threatens serious bodily harm to another person or persons, we must notify the police of these threats and inform the intended victim.
  • If a client intends to harm himself or herself – we will first, make every effort to enlist our client’s cooperation in ensuring his or her safety. If, however, our client does not cooperate, then we must take further measures to ensure his or her safety. These actions are required by law and do not require the client’s permission.
